Planning and Construction: 2002 – 2010 General InformationSeptember of 2006 marked the beginning of a new chapter in the life of Kawaiaha‘o Church. In 2002, the congregation decided that the present administrative office building and the social hall, also known as Likeke Hall, should be demolished and a new two-story structure erected in their place. The new building, to be called the Multi-Purpose Center, will provide much-needed office space, additional classrooms and meeting rooms, a conference room, a new social hall, and a modern kitchen. The new building will also contain a bookstore, a reading library, the church archives, and a mini-museum of church antiquities.
Changes to the Sanctuary Lower LevelThe bookstore was converted into the Royal Wedding Center office. The remodeled sanctuary basement currently houses the Kawaiaha'o staff, several offices, conference rooms and a comprehensive facility for the Ministry of Music and Performing Arts, including a larger choir rehearsal room and two smaller rehearsal rooms, which can be used for drama or dance. Looking Toward the FutureIn a transition to a more eco-friendly outlook, the new Multi-Purpose Center will be built using the latest environmentally responsible techniques and materials. The planned use of recyclable materials, energy saving electrical lighting/devices, super-insulation and other sustainable methods represents a commitment to the Hawaiian concept of malama 'aina, to care for the land.
Project Duration and SchedulePreliminary site preparation began in September 2007, with demolition of the old buildings completed in November 2007. Because of delays in building permits, construction work may not actually begin until early 2009. Once started, construction of the new facility will be completed in 16 to 18 months. Costs and FundingThe cost of the entire project is estimated at $21 million. Funding will come from a combination of personal contributions, charitable giving by local companies and foundations, government grants, etc., over several years. More information can be found under the section on our Capital Campaign. Timetable for CompletionThe entire project is expected to be completed by October 2010.
